Materials Science and Engineering in the 21st Century: The Emerging influence of nanotechnology and biology

Abstract:

In the 1960s, “materials science and engineering” became widely defined as a separate field growing out of such traditional fields as metallurgy and ceramic engineering. In the ensuing fifty years, materials have continued to play a critical role, often the limiting factor in technological advances. The new millennium began with the announcement of the National Nanotechnology Initiative by President Clinton in 2000. The identity of materials science and engineering has since become intimately intertwined with the term “nanotechnology,” and that interrelationship will be critically reviewed.
It has also been said that “biology is the physics of the twenty-first century,” i.e., while advances in physics provided many of the dominant science stories through the middle of the twentieth century, advances in biology since the Watson-Crick paper of 1953 have become the dominant ones. The emerging field of materials science and engineering in the 1960s was generally considered to be part of the physical sciences. Since that time, however, we have found some of the more interesting applications of engineered (inorganic) materials to be in the field of medicine, e.g., metals for prostheses in orthopaedic surgery and stents in cardiology. The field of materials science and engineering may now be moving beyond these “biomaterials” (engineered materials used in medical applications) to include true “biological materials” as represented by the recent progress in tissue engineering.
