Brazilian experience in corrosion science

Institute for Technological Research of São Paulo State - IPT

Abstract
This presentation has the objective to show the beginning of Corrosion Science in Brazil which was driven at that time by oil and gas industry, when Petrobras assumed the responsibility for the exploitation, production, transportation and refining of Brazilian petroleum. Due to the lack of knowledge in corrosion, Brazilian technicians were trained abroad and after some time the courses started in Brazil. Due to this growing scenery, the specialists pointed out the necessity of a corrosion association in Brazil, like NACE; so ABRACO was founded and plays an important role in research centers and universities. Besides the beginning of Corrosion Science in Brazil and ABRACO, this presentation highlights the role of the University of São Paulo and the Laboratory of Corrosion and Protection at the Institute of Technological Research of São Paulo State - IPT, and collaborations in corrosion R&D. Finally, some failure analyses and corrosion protection techniques will be shown.
