Antoniac Vasile Iulian , received the M.E., Ph.D. and Postdoc degrees in Materials Science at University Politehnica of Bucharest. Since 2002, he has been associated with the Medical Engineering program in the Faculty Materials Science and Engineering, University Politehnica of Bucharest, which is focused on biomaterials obtaining and characterization, medical image processing and the development of new implants for medical applications. Dr. Iulian Antoniac is the leader of the Biomaterials Group, head of the Biomaterials & Interface Phenomenon Laboratory, full professor at Faculty Materials Science and Engineering. He was appointed Vice Dean of Faculty Materials Science and Engineering and member of the Senate of University Politehnica of Bucharest in 2016. Professor Antoniac has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, 9 patents, several books and over 50 invited lectures. He is currently President and Council Member of the Romanian Society for Biomaterials (SRB), Former President and permanent Member of Executive Committee of the International Society for Ceramics in Medicine (ISCM). Research interests include metallic biomaterials, bioceramics, coatings, biocomposites, polymers, retrieval analysis of explants, microscopy techniques for materials characterization, surface modification, interaction tissue-biomaterials, bone regeneration, retrieval and failure analysis of implants.

Current trends in materials for medicine – bioceramics and metals

Resumo
Materials for medicine are used for implants manufacturing and the variaty of implants available offer to the surgeon a powerful set of clinical tools for patient treatment. A significant numbers of materials including metals, ceramic, polymers, composites and some nanomaterials exist and are used in medicine for currently used implants and prostheses. New trends in metallic biomaterials, surface modification, and characterization techniques will be reviewed and discussed with particular reference to their relevance in biomaterials-tissue interactions phenomena. Experimental results performed on different new metallic biomaterials like biodegradable metals will be shown. Also, some practical examinations for specific cases will be presented in order to show the advantage given by the advanced microscopically techniques in evaluation the biomaterials-tissue interface. Future research and studies on some promising biomaterials are essential in terms of biocompatibility, structure and properties in order to make them clinically viable.
